Write for an Academic Discussion
You have 10 minutes. Your professor is teaching a class on media and society. Write a post responding to the professor's question. Express and support your opinion and make a contribution to the discussion in your own words. Write at least 100 words.
Surveys show that many young adults now get most of their news from social media rather than from newspapers, television, or news websites. This raises an important question for our course. Has the shift to social media had a mostly positive or mostly negative effect on how people get their news? Explain your view and give reasons to support it.
Mostly positive. In the past, a few large newspapers and TV channels decided what counted as news. Now eyewitnesses can post videos the moment something happens, and independent reporters can reach large audiences. During natural disasters, social media is often the fastest way to find out which roads are closed or where help is available.
I think it's mostly negative. Platforms are designed to keep us scrolling, so they promote posts that make people angry or excited, not posts that are accurate. False stories can reach millions of people before anyone checks them. People also end up seeing only opinions they already agree with.
