In a converted barn on the edge of a small town, Joanna Field is surrounded by pianos. Some are missing keys, some have cracked wood, and one has clearly spent years in a damp garage.
Joanna repairs them, tunes them and then gives them away free to schools, community centres and families who could never afford to buy one.
She started almost by accident. Five years ago, a neighbour who was moving abroad asked if she knew anyone who might want his grandmother's old upright piano.
“I couldn't bear the thought of it being thrown away,” she says, “so I said I'd take it myself. I had no idea how I was going to get it into my house.”
In the end it took four friends, a borrowed van and most of a Saturday afternoon. The piano needed a lot of work, and Joanna, who had trained as a carpenter, decided to do it herself.
By the time she had finished, she knew more about pianos than she had ever expected to.
Word got around. Within a year, people were phoning her to offer instruments they no longer wanted, and she has now restored more than ninety.
Many are simply too badly damaged, and she keeps them only for spare parts.
Finding new homes for the pianos is the part she enjoys most. Primary schools are the most common places to receive one, although she has also given pianos to a hospital, a prison and a retirement home.
“The staff told me that one man, who hardly spoke to anyone, sat down and played for an hour,” she says. “Nobody had known he could play.”
Joanna admits that the project costs her more than she would like. Although the pianos are free, she pays for the transport herself, and moving a piano safely is expensive.
She hopes this will eventually allow her to take on an assistant and restore even more instruments.
“A piano isn't really furniture,” she says, running her hand along the keys of one that is almost ready to leave. “It's meant to be played. If it's just sitting in a garage, it isn't really a piano at all.”
