My father finally passed his driving test last month, at the age of sixty-two. For most of his life he had on buses, trains and, I have to admit, lifts from my mother. When she started working nights, however, he decided it was time to matters into his own hands. His first lessons did not go well. He was so nervous that he kept mixing the brake and the accelerator, and on one occasion he drove twice around the same roundabout because he could not up his mind which exit to take. His instructor, a patient woman in her thirties, never once her temper. She told him that older learners often worry too much about making mistakes, and that confidence would come with . She was right. After about three months he was driving to the supermarket on his own, and by the day of the test he was calm to enjoy the drive. He made one small error, but the examiner said it was not serious enough to him. Now he wants to drive all the way to Scotland next summer, an idea my mother finds rather less exciting than he does.
